Body Talk with Carmen Borgonovo

The vibrant London-based stylist, fashion and jewellery director of On The Rocks magazine and co-founder of luxury dress line Borgo de Nor, waxes lyrical about the wonders of the modern bodysuit.

What is your full name?
Carmen Elena Borgonovo.

Have you ever owned a bodysuit before?
Yes, it was black and had a criss-cross back. I would wear it with high-waisted jeans and biker boots in the early 1990s. It was my favourite outfit to go out dancing in.

What do you associate with an all-in-one bodysuit?
So many references spring to mind – those iconic 1970s photographs of women in bodysuits and heels by Guy Bourdin, for example. But on a more personal level, the bodysuit takes me back to my childhood in the 1980s, when I would read Elle and Vogue and see supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Helena Christensen wearing all types of bodies.

Tell me how the bodysuit your wearing today, the Martha, feels on?
It feels effortless, sexy and fun.

Does it make any difference to your body, shape or appearance?
I love the way it looks on. There is something very playful about a bodysuit, it’s both boyish and feminine. I wish I could walk out the door with nothing else on.

How do you think you will wear it?
I think it will become a wardrobe staple for me. I’d pair it with jeans, long skirts and high-waisted evening trousers.

Is there anything you would change if you could?
In general terms, absolutely nothing – happy in the moment.
